Kravet Inc. is a home fashion brand that distributes fabrics, furniture, wall coverings, trimmings, carpets and accessories. Kravet studio of design is based in the city of New York, offices and warehouse spaces located within Long Island, South Carolina, Bethpage, and Anderson. The pile usually consists of twisted tufts which are typically heat-treated to maintain their structure. This company has over forty show rooms in Canada and some in the United States and maintains professional office spaces and distribution through warehouse in Poole, located in the United Kingdom.
Shmuel Kravetsky, who later established the name Samuel Kravet originally relocated from Russia in the city of Grodno, to the United States of America in the year of 1903 with his three children and spouse. When he was originally a tailor, he began to supply apparel that was tailored to an upscale market of clients in the Metropolitan New York greater area. Samuel Kravet noticed his clients having a strong desire for interior design help, so he began to create rugs and other textiles, decorative trims, carpets, tassels, Persian rugs, which he would offer when he would go to his clients homes. He made a strong shift into carpets and rugs as well as interior design rather than staying with apparel. Mr. Kravet participated in the historical development of carpets and textiles of an emerging interior design industry. Kravet rug is a textile floor covering typically consisting of an upper layer of pile attached to a backing.
During the year of 1918, Sam Kravet started a small carpet and trim shop located on the Lower East portion of Manhattan on Norfolk Street. In the year of 1923, he and his four children, Sam, Hy, Morris, and Sol joined the family business. They all decided to relocate to East 21st Street and changed the title of the company to S. Kravet And Sons. The pile was traditionally made from wool, but, since the 20th century, synthetic fibers such as polypropylene, nylon or polyester are often used, as these fibers are less expensive than wool. They started offering designer rugs and fabrics. It is generally believed that the density of knots, the age, the material, and the rarity of the design or knots determines the value of a carpet.
Kravet specializes in braided rugs that are made by using a total of 3 or more strips of wool, or other fabric, then turning over the raw edges into the center and making sure to braid them together. The more tightly a rug is woven or knotted, the more detailed a design can be. For a carpet or rug with an oval shape, the braid located in the center should be 1 inch longer than the width length. These are both handmade and machine-made. This combination of braids is reasons why Kravet rugs are so strong and can withstand the tests of weather and time. Woven rugs include both flat rugs (for example kilims) and pile rugs. Long lacing braids continue down to create the carpet/rug structure they are classically known for. The term carpet is often used interchangeably with the term rug, although the term carpet can be applied to a floor covering that covers an entire house, whereas a rug is generally no bigger than a single room, and traditionally does not even span from one wall to another, and is typically not even attached as part of the floor.
