Morris and Co Wallpaper Prints We Love

The designer spent much of his career advocating for everyday British laborers. He also lobbied for architectural and environmental conservation across Britain, inspired by the nation’s natural beauty and rich history. This love of nature, country and craftsmanship comes across in each and every wallpaper design. It has existed since the beginning with its very first design in 1864. Fighting the ills of industrialization, which plagued both the natural world and the British working people, William Morris politicized his wallpaper company. Started alongside his Pre-Raphaelite friends Charles Faulkner and P. P. Marshall, Morris & Co. quickly became a driving force in 19th century British design. Founded shortly before Morris and Co, Sanderson Design Group acquired the wallpaper and fabric company in 1940. These include the famous Willow Bough, Pimpernel and Strawberry Thief wallpapers. Today, Sanderson Design Group also represents Zoffany, another heritage wallpaper brand rooted in British history. Morris and Co Pimpernel Wallpaper

Morris and Co Pimpernel Wallpaper is another popular pattern from the British wallcoverings and textile design. First produced in 1876, the delicate floral Pimpernel print was one of few designs to touch on international influences. At the time, wallpapers from China and Japan were incredibly popular in Britain. However, these designs typically featured only exotic plants and birds completely removed from the UK.

The designer chose instead to render an indigenous British plant when designing the Pimpernel wallpaper. The designer’s Pimpernel wallpaper can still be found in a number of historic interiors. These include William Waldorf Astoria’s Two Temple Place mansion in London and Morris’ own Kelmscott Manor. Today, shoppers can find Pimpernel Wallpaper in five colorways. Colorways available through L.A. Design Concepts include Bullrush/Russet, Fig/Sisal, Bayleaf/Manilla and Brick/Olive.

Morris and Company Botanical Wallpapers

Other botanical wallpapers designed by Morris and inspired by the British countryside are Morris & Co Strawberry Thief wallpaper and Arbutus wallpaper. A third is Chrysanthemum wallpaper, which remains a favorite years later. Morris and Co Strawberry Thief wallpaper was designed by the designer himself in 1883. He created the print after a series of interactions between the artist and thieving birds outside Kelmscott Manor. Strawberry Thief is one of few wallpaper prints produced in the indigo discharge method. This method is an ancient Eastern technique of applying dye to fabric and paper. Pure Strawberry Thief wallpaper is available in five colorways through L.A. Design Concepts.

Arbutus Wallpaper is another historic print. This print was created by the design studio just before World War I began in 1914. One of only two prints crafted by British designer Kathleen Kersey for Morris and Co, Arbutus is delicate and lovely. Original editions of Arbutus can be found in the Victoria and Albert Museum’s permanent collection. Shoppers can find Arbutus in nine different colorways through L.A. Design Concepts. Another beautiful botanical wallpaper produced by the brand is Chrysanthemum wallpaper. Toile wallpapers typically feature dreamy pastoral scenes, complete with idealized figures, animals and botanical illustrations. All decorative elements are usually printed in a single color while the background remains neutral. According to Sanderson Design Group, Morris Co Chrysanthemum toile was inspired by late 19th century wallpaper produced by Jeffrey Co. The China Blue/Cream and eggshell gold colorways are arguably the most classic of those available in the Chrysanthemum Toile wallpaper.
