Maxwell Fabrics was originally founded by Maxwell Garaway as Vancouver Quilting Ltd in the early 1950s. According to the company, Vancouver Quilting Ltd was the very first company in Western Canada to quilt fabrics with multi-quilt machines. At the time, Vancouver Quilting Ltd produced fabrics for everything from comforters to athletic wear -- particularly ski apparel. Maxwell Fabrics became popular across Canada early on in its history, celebrated for custom-designed bedspreads. These quilted bedspreads are what the company is now known for. Today, Maxwell Fabrics remains a family-run business. In fact, the company is currently run by a third generation of Garaways. The Maxwell Fabrics team consists of industry experts who respect the company’s long history of producing quality fabrics while capturing the latest in design. Maxwell Tartan Fabric

Maxwell tartan fabrics often feature contemporary twists on the classic favorite. The idea of the “tartan” actually originated with the Celts whose culture dates back to 1200 BCE. However, the tartan plaid we know and love today likely originated in early 16th century Scotland. Distinct for its crisscross pattern of vertical and horizontal lines and bands, the tartan pattern was originally woven in wool.
