Morris And Company Fabric

More than 150 years after William Morris started his iconic design company Morris & Co, wallpapers and fabrics from the brand are still popular. With partners like John Henry Dearle and Kate Faulkner, Morris and Company released dozens of designs during the 19th century. Many of today's new releases are based on archive prints from Morris and Co. Morris and Company fabric, wallpaper, drawings and watercolors can still be found in historic homes and hotels across the UK and US. Today, Sanderson’s Morris fabric includes both heritage prints and brand-new styles.

British artists like Allison Gee have recently produced new designs for Morris and Co fabric. Interior designers often seek out this designer's fabrics for their vibrant colorways and stunning botanical illustrations. 160 years after the company’s founding, the fabric remains the perfect choice for homeowners and designers due to its extraordinary craftsmanship. Follow below for a few of our favorite fabric styles.

Morris Fabrics

Classic Morris fabric designs include Strawberry Thief, Marigold, Morris Seaweed, Bramble and Crown Imperial. Each of these was originally produced in Morris’ late 19th or early 20th century United Kingdom studio. Bramble was designed in 1879 by Kate Faulkner, a relative of one of Morris and Co’s partners. Crown Imperial was designed by William Morris himself in 1876 and Morris Seaweed was designed by J. H. Dearle in 1901. Every fabric can be used for curtains, pillow covers and/or duvet covers. Our Morris upholstery fabric can also be used to cover headboards, armchairs, sofas and cushions on dining chairs.

Morris And Co Strawberry Thief Fabric

LA Design Concepts Morris and Co Strawberry Thief fabric is one of many classic Morris upholstery fabric designs available. In our post “160 Years of Iconic Morris & Co Wallpaper Designs,” we noted that Morris designed Strawberry Thief fabric in 1883. He designed Strawberry Thief upholstery fabric as a textile, though the print of this fabric was later used in wallpaper.

The lovely Strawberry Thief fabric depicts a scene that frequently occurred outside Morris’ kitchen window at Kelmscott Manor. Birds would often swoop over his garden to steal strawberries as they ripened. Strawberry Thief fabric remains one of the company’s most popular Morris upholstery fabric designs.

Morris And Co Marigold Fabric

Another Morris fabric still produced by Sanderson over a century later is Morris and Co Marigold fabric. Marigold fabric was designed by William Morris in 1875. In fact, Marigold fabric was one of very few designs Morris created specifically for both fabric and wallpaper. The pattern repeat of this fabric and wallpaper makes it suitable for both.

Marigold fabric is available in ten colorways. These include vibrant tones like orange / pink and navy / turquoise. Our favorite colorway of Marigold fabric is blue / ivory because it is perfectly classic.

More on Morris & Co Fabrics

Not all Morris & Co fabrics by the yard from LA Design Concepts were created by Dearle, Faulkner or Morris. In fact, Sanderson’s Morris & Co continues to release new fabric and wallpaper designs to mark important milestones. Recent additions include Fruit Minor, Kelmscott Tree, Forest and Seasons By May. Many of these new fabric designs were crafted by Alison Gee. Alison Gee became Head of Design for Morris and Company in 2011.

Forest is a beautiful fabric designed by Alison Gee and recently released by Sanderson. This fabric was designed in 2013. It was created as a semi-reproduction of the Forest Tapestry originally released by Morris & Co in the 19th century. It features a series of acanthus leaves, rabbits, flowers and peacocks in a repeat pattern. Seasons By May is one of our favorite fabric designs created in recent years. This fabric was created recently but was based on an 1895 embroidery called “Spring and Summer.” According to Sanderson, the “Spring and Summer” patterns were likely embroidered by May Morris during the Arts and Crafts Movement.

Morris And Co Kelmscott Tree Fabric

Sanderson's Morris and Co Kelmscott Tree fabric was designed by Gee as part of the company’s 160th anniversary collection. Kelmscott Tree was inspired by curtains found in William Morris’ Kelmscott Manor home. Kelmscott Manor still houses many original William Morris fabrics and designs. The curtains that feature a similar design to the Kelmscott Tree Fabric were embroidered by May Morris. Designer Alison Gee created Kelmscott Tree fabric by painting the motif and then adapting it into embroidery.

One of the few differences between Gee’s version and May Morris’ version is that the vertical trellis motif has been redacted. According to Sanderson, the Kelmscott Tree fabric is crafted from a blend of cotton and linen. This 49 linen 38 cotton blend makes it suitable for upholstery. Shoppers can also purchase Kelmscott Tree fabric as embroidery on both silk and linen. Find Kelmscott Tree fabric in four different colors, including Woad / Wine and Forest / Gold.
