Toile Upholstery Fabric
In our blog post “Five Classic Patterns Reimagined,” we explain the history of toile upholstery wallpaper and fabric. The playful, whimsical prints of fabric were popularized by designers Christophe-Philippe Oberkamp and Jean Baptiste Huet in mid-18th century France. Throughout their careers in 1700s France, Huet and Oberkamp released more than 30,000 toile designs, from fabric upholstery to twallpaper. Back then, wallpaper and fabric featured idealized scenes of France’s pastoral landscape as well as classical motifs. Today, toile fabrics and wallpapers reference the landscapes and cityscapes of modern metropolises and hot spots around the world. Some reference politics, music and celebrities. Others harken back to history, honoring the designs of Huet and Oberkamp.
Toile fabric designs are typically woven or printed in a single color like green, blue, purple, pink or red. These colors are placed against a solid background for a stark, monochromatic effect. LA Design Concepts also offers fabrics in yellow, black, orange, multi, gray, peach and dozens of other colorways. We offer over 500 skews of toile fabric online. Our favorite brands for fabric upholstery include Clarke & Clarke, Trend, JF and Fabricut. With its quaint cottages, Clarke & Clarke’s Maison Toile Fabric Upholstery in Charcoal is perfect for the playful decorator. From Clarke & Clarke’s Studio G Collection, this 100% cotton fabric can be used for drapery and upholstery. Another stunning upholstery fabric is Trend’s 4735 fabric in Navy, from the company’s Vern Yip Collection. This fabric is 100% polyester, intended solely for upholstery. Featuring a folksy pastoral scene, JF’s Heron 47 Toile Fabric is another favorite. JF’s Heron is from their Dahlia Collection and is made from 63% rayon, 27% polyester and 10% flax with a Crypton Home finish.
Toile Curtains and Draps
With its charming story and classic style, it is not a surprise that toile curtain fabric still finds its way in modern and traditional interiors as curtains and Toile drapery fabric. Toiles originated from the French phrase ‘Toile de Jouy’ used in the 18th century, characterized by their surface designs which depict entertaining narratives such as romantic depictions, mythos, or rural life printed in one or two colors on pale background fabrics. Nowadays, however, people have gone beyond the traditional blue red and black and introduced grays greens and even bold contemporary tones enabling toile drapery to blend well in different kinds of design. The multiple designs and ideal colors achieve depth and aesthetic view in an orderly and sophisticated mood.
Toile fabrics applied on the windows as drapes makes decor a little dramatic in the best way possible and makes the whole room look stunning while telling a story. The scale of toile patterns is as vast as that of small close views which would appear as texture from a distance or outlines large and strong pictures. They are especially effective when employed in large quantities since the full scope of the design is visible on large curtain panels. The classic swags and jabots will look gorgeous on toilet drapery in a formal setting while simple panels would look modern in an informal setting. When employed either in swags or as curtains, toile brings an artistic charm to the room and it will not go out of style.
Blue Toile Fabric
Blue Toile fabric is perhaps the most classic and enduring colorway of toile designs. At L.A. Design Concepts, we particularly love the blue fabrics from Schumacher and Marvic. Many fabrics released by Schumacher and Marvic reference historic fabric and wallpaper prints from the 18th and 19th centuries. Schumacher’s Les Losanges, Shengyou and Birds of Paradise fabrics are especially lovely. Les Losanges Toile Fabric in Sky was made to resemble ancient Greek and Roman motifs from a 1790s book of etchings. Schumacher’s Les Losanges Toile Fabric is from their Lasersohn Toile Collection, which also includes botanical illustrations inspired by early 19th century drawings. Marvic La Balancoire Toile Fabric Blue is another special pattern. From the Toile Proposals III Collection, this fabric depicts a traditional pastoral scene. It is available in twelve other contemporary and classic colorways like slate/aqua and navy/mink.
Toile Fabric Red
Red Toile fabric is another classic colorway commonly found in fabric and wallpaper. Jasper, Fabricut, Clarke & Clarke, JF and Marvic all offer fabrics in red colorways, each with their own twist on the classic design. One of our favorite red Toile fabrics is Marvic’s Four Continents Toile Fabric in Lacquer. The scene depicted in this wallpaper was actually based on an original Jean Baptiste Huet design from 1794. In the later years of his career, Huet included motifs, symbols and elements from India, Africa, Egypt and Israel. This fabric includes stags, elephants, horses, songbirds, lions, cherubs, palms, swans, squirrels and other animals throughout. It is part of Marvic’s Country House III Collection which features other Toiles, 18th century block prints and geometric prints inspired by Moorish tiles.

West Indies Toile Cotton Print Toile Fabric Green on White from Brunschwig and Fils
Designs in the toile fabric green colorway are a bit more unusual than their red and blue counterparts. However, LA Design Concepts offers quite a few fabric green skews. Our favorites include Schumacher’s Toile de la Prairie Toile Fabric Green. Part of the Lasersohn Toile Collection, this light green Toile pictures a meadow with butterflies, songbirds and branches. It was based on an 1820s Toile fabric. Somewhat similar to the Schumacher, Brunschwig and Fils Bird and Thistle Cotton Print Toile Fabric in Green is another favorite. This Toile was based on an English textile design created in 1785. Today, this heritage fabric can be found in the country estate of Henry Francis du Pont in Winterthur, Delaware.
Toile Fabric Pink
Found in everything from shocking magenta to delicate blush, there is a toile fabric pink from LA Design Concepts to suit each space. Our favorite pink fabrics include the whimsical Brunschwig and Fils Cirque Chinois and the unusual Schumacher Modern Toile Fabric in Pink & Black. From the Summer Palace Collection, the Brunschwig and Fils fabric explores legends and daily life from Chinese folklore. Designed by Johnson Hartig, Schumacher’s Modern Toile references Renaissance drawings in a chic repeat pattern.
